Nutrien – Power & Control System Upgrade

CEL recently completed a Power and Control system upgrade at the Nutrien Ammonia Compressor Terminal in Watson, SK.

Over a three month period, CEL crews worked 24/7 shifts to get the project completed in order to bring the plant back into operation for Nutrien’s Fall Shipping Season. The project consisted of removing and replacing all of the aging electrical equipment, including: 5KV and 600V switchgear, 1.5MVA transformer, 600V MCC, 5KV/1KV NGR’s, 12KVA UPS and 600V/120V distribution panels. The 5MVA distribution & substation was also modernized with a new SEL safety relay system, tap-changer controller, generator transfer switch and ground grid & fence expansion. At the same time the Power System Upgrade was underway, CEL’s Instrumentation team replaced the entire plant control system consisting of six large PLC cabinets in multiple locations on site, four large compressor skid control upgrades, network & IT panel upgrades, modernization of basic process and safety integrated field instrumentation, control room electrical & HMI renovations, and recommissioning of the entire plant.

CEL received a special thanks from the Nutrien Management team for bringing this demanding project in incident free and on schedule under very challenging circumstances. Nice work to everyone involved!
